Many activities on World Water Day!
On and around World Water Day (22 March) many events took place across Europe to promote our European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Water is a human right!” The week was very successful in Lithuania where there was a lot of press and TV coverage of our ECI and several thousand signatures were collected. In many countries joint events were organised by anti poverty groups, women’s organisations, environmental groups and trade unions. In 10 countries groups of young greens organised events and promoted the “right2water”. Pictures and videos of the events are available on our website.
Despite the many signatures that have been collected, we still need to reach the minimum number required in at least two more EU countries. The latest figures and the minimum per country can be seen on our website: http://www.right2water.eu/node/37/view . We have passed the threshold in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Slovenia and Slovakia. and there have been notable increases in Lithuania, Greece, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Luxembourg. We expect two of these countries will be the the sixth and seventh
needed to reach the minimum.
So we are just a few thousand signatures away from being the first successful ECI. We would again like to ask YOU to promote it among your friends and colleagues, at workplaces and at other places where people meet, and through social media. Our campaign was spread widely across Germany through Facebook and Twitter. We think this has been and continues to be a big help in the campaign. We are convinced that we will get ‘the human right to water and sanitation’ on the European political agenda, but by collecting even more signatures, we can increase the pressure to get our proposals turned in European legislation.
Water and sanitation are a human right! Water is a public good, not a commodity! Many millions of people continue to be deprived of clean, safe and affordable water and sanitation, even in Europe. The European Commission can do something about it, but WE have to put it on their agenda! Please continue to promote our ECI! Signature forms are available for each country on our website http://www.right2water.eu/signature-forms and they have our logo and a return address on it.
